"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."
James 5:14
In the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, Jesus reaches out through the priest to touch and heal those facing serious illness or the challenges of aging. As the Catechism teaches, His healing ministry was a sign of the Kingdom of God and foreshadows His victory over sin and death (CCC 1503-1505).
This sacrament offers not only physical healing, if it be God’s will, but more importantly, spiritual strength. Through the Holy Spirit, the sick receive peace and courage, helping them bear illness with faith. The Church invites those in need to receive this sacrament early, as a reminder that Christ is with them in their suffering, offering comfort, strength, and hope.
