"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.'"
- Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1213
In the baptism of infants, parents are responsible for choosing godparents who will serve as positive Catholic role models for their child. A godparent may later become a sponsor for the child at Confirmation. Godparents are expected to commit to supporting and nurturing the child’s faith, as well as offering guidance to the parents, throughout the family’s faith journey. However, godparents are not required to be legal guardians.
Each Godparent is required to meet the following qualifications according to Canon Laws 873 and 874:
At least 16 years of age
Not the natural or adoptive parents of the baptized child
Fully initiated Roman Catholic (has received the sacraments of baptism, first holy communion, and confirmation)
If married, validly married in the Catholic Church; If not married, living in accord with the Church’s teachings on sexuality
Actively practicing Catholic in communion with the Catholic Church; Striving to live a life in harmony with its teachings on faith and chastity
Either male or female; If two are chosen, one must be male, the other female
